Image: Ying Xu, a professor of Biochemistry and the Institute of Bioinformatics, was recently elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the highest distinction of the organization. IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology. The organization consists of 39 Societies ranging from Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society, Control Systems Society, and Power Electronics Society to Computer Society, Information Theory Society, and Robotics and Automation Society. The IEEE publishes nearly one-third of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and co-sponsors more than 1,900 international technical conferences annually. Each year, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow. Less than 0.1% of voting members are selected and conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors annually as IEEE Fellow.
