Abstract:  Cells experience adaptive forces when their environments change.  Can these forces be understood in terms of physics-like principles?  We explore several adaptive situations: how food drives ribosomal upswitching to duplicate cells, the Warburg effect of inefficient energy usage, the speed and efficiency properties of molecular motors, and proteostasis and its collapse in cellular aging and death.  We explore the nature of their optimization principles.
